Distinguished International Services Special Award

Hwa-Nien Yu

Emeritus Member
IBM Research
Chairman, Technical Advisory Committee
Industrial Technology Research Institute
Dr. Hwa-Nien Yu was born in Shanghai, China. He received his B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees all in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois. During his graduate study at the University of Illinois, he participated in the design of the ILLIAC-II computer at the Digital Computer Laboratory. Since joining IBM Research, he has been engaged in various solid state device and technology research and development.

Dr. Yu is one of the world’s leading experts in semiconductor device technology and VLSI design. His early work with his colleagues in the joint publication of the “Scaling Theory” of MOSFET became the classical reference to small FET designs for VLSI MOSFET technology. In 1970s, he led the research team at IBM Research to demonstrate the ground breaking one micron VLSI MOSFET technology. In device physics and technology, he and his colleague also made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the hot electron effects in MOS devices.

For his many key contributions, Dr. Yu was elected IEEE Fellow in 1986 and was recognized by IEEE as a co-recipient of the Jack Morton Award in 1991. He was honored as a Honorary Professor of X’ian Jiao Tong University in 1996. He was elected an Academician of the Eurasia Academy of Sciences in 1999. Dr. Yu was elected an Academician of the Academia Sinica in 2000.

Since late 1970s, Dr. Yu has been an advisor to Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to help nurturing technology research and development for Taiwan’s semiconductor and hi-tech industry. He also served as advisors to National Science Counsel, National Chiao Tung University, and a Director of Institute for Information Industry, Member/Executive Secretary of Technology Review Board (TRB) of the Executive Yuan, and Member of IBM Supervisory Committee to National Center for High Speed Computing (NCHC).

Dr. Yu has been actively promoting many academic and professional society activities. He was a Director of CIE-USA, and Chairman of Chinese American Academic and Professional Society (CAAPS).

In 1994, at the invitation of the State Bureau of Foreign Experts, he became the leading Expert Advisor on IC to the Ministry of Electronics Industry in China in 1995. He led the Ministry of Electronics Industry and a team of experts to propose to China’s State Council for funding to establish China’s first modern 8-inch IC factory which became NEC-HuaHong in Shanghai, China. Later, he also helped in co-founding the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Company (SMIC) in Shanghai, China.

Since retirement from IBM Research, Dr. Yu has been a Research Member Emeritus at IBM Research. He has been a Senior Advisor to ITRI in Taiwan. He was the Chairman of Advanced R&D Steering Committee for ITRI from 1994 through 2003 and has been the Chairman of Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for ITRI since 1993.
