Xiuli Wang

Project Leader
Injection Well Completions
and Sand Control
BP p.l.c.
Dr. Xiuli Wang is a practicing petroleum engineer with BP in Houston, currently functioning as a completion engineer with worldwide implications. She now serves as the Project Leader of a major company-wide project in injection well completions and sand control. The results of this work have already re-established BP guidelines of injection well completions and ultimately may change the way the company operates injection wells by employing new practices previously unknown to the industry.

In spite of the fact that her work has been largely internal and proprietary, with deliberately few publications in the professional literature but extensive internal reports, she enjoys substantial reputation among her peers outside the company and she has been invited to chair SPE sessions and forums and also participate in industry professional publications. She was recently featured in a major journal as an exemplary representative of Chinese-born engineers employed by the US based petroleum industry.

She reached her current assignment and position after more than six years of service with BP that spanned work first as a reservoir engineer for full-field modeling work She then supported the completion team as a petroleum engineer, and a highlight of that time was the development of flux models and guidelines for the minimization of producer well screen erosion. Finally, she was the lead production engineer for a major field in the continental shelf, handling both internal engineering problems and managing a large number of outside contractors and service companies. She also handled government regulatory requirements. In repeated annual evaluations she was declared outstanding by her supervisors.

She joined BP following a stellar academic work, at the University of Houston, with a full research fellowship and where she consistently topped her class, finally earning a PhD in chemical engineering with a number of professional publications in the fundamentals of multi-phase and complex flow through porous media.

Xiuli is an immigrant to the United States and the profession. She came to the University of Houston not as an untested graduate student but after earning a MS degree from China’s premier technical university, Tsinghua University, followed by six years of work with one of China’s major petroleum companies, Sinopec.
