Yixing (Eddie) Ruan, PhD, is a technical leader in the Routing Technologies Group at Cisco Systems. Dr. Ruan is responsible for system level design for the new Cisco 12000 product development. He leads the development of Cisco IOS and IOX software for Engine 3 & 5 for the Cisco 12000.

At Cisco since 2000, Dr. Ruan is the Principal Developer responsible for developing numerous products in the Cisco 12000 platform, from developing IP Routing in Cisco IOS-XR operating system, system level design for forwarding, high availability to develop ACL, QOS, and PBR features in Cisco IOS. He designed and implemented algorithms to significantly improve the performance and scalability of feature handling. He is leading the 20G forwarding linecard design and development, the next generation routing product aiming to provide high scalability and high performance edge platforms to service providers.

Prior to Cisco, Dr. Ruan was the Staff Engineer at the Uniden Research and Development Center, a key engineering contributor responsible for developing CDPD wireless modem, and implementing CDPD protocol in link layer.

Dr. Ruan holds a PhD, in Mathematics and a MS in Computer Network and Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California, USA in 2000 and 1997. He graduated from Peking University, Beijing, China with a B.S. in Information Science in 1994. In addition, he enrolls in an MBA program at San Jose State University, CA.

Dr. Ruan is the holder of two US Patents and author of several technical white papers.

A holder of several honor awards at Cisco systems, Dr. Ruan actively participates in Chinese Information & Networking Association (CINA)’s programs and events. He actively involves in its Back to Asia program, which is a bridging forum between US and Asia. He participates in San Jose City’s volunteer work to build houses for low incoming families, and provides financial assistance to four children in Chinese poverty stricken areas, sponsors them on yearly base, until they complete their education goals. He lives with his wife Mengxiang Tang and their daughter Ashley in San Jose, CA
